Re: Senior Mechanical Engineer, product development

Dear Ms. Brandt,

Your posting for a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Buckeye Process Equipment asks for someone who can improve field reliability and bring product costs down at the same time. In my experience those two goals usually point to the same design decisions, and I have spent the last four years proving it at Miami Valley Fluid Systems.

Our centrifugal pumps for water utilities were failing in their first year more often than we wanted, mostly at the seals. I worked through the warranty returns with our service team, ran the bearing loads again in ANSYS and changed the seal and bearing layout. First-year field failures fell 40%. In the same program I moved the housing family from machined to cast parts and cut the part count from 14 to nine, which reduced cost by 18%.

I like being close to the people who build and install what I design. At Great Miami Equipment I supported about 40 site installations and fed what I saw back into our standard skid designs, and introducing GD&T on every drawing cut supplier nonconformances by about a third. Today I work with six casting and machining suppliers on first articles and corrective actions.

I lead a small team of two engineers and a designer through stage-gate reviews, and I have taken three new products from concept to production. I became a licensed PE in Ohio in 2023 and hold the CSWP.

I would welcome the chance to discuss your product roadmap and where reliability work would pay off first.

Sincerely,

Gavin Osterhout

How this letter works

What each part of the letter above does, and how to do the same in yours.

The opening

It takes the two goals in the posting, reliability and cost, and argues they point to the same decisions. Engineering directors notice a candidate who brings a point of view, not just a skill list.

Whom to address

Address the director of engineering or the engineering manager named in the posting. Engineering leaders are usually on LinkedIn; a named letter gets read before HR filters.

Requirements matched to proof

The posting asks forImprove field reliability
The letter showsSeal and bearing redesign; first-year failures down 40%.
The posting asks forReduce product cost
The letter showsMachined to cast parts, 14 parts to nine, cost down 18%.
The posting asks forWork with suppliers and production
The letter showsGD&T on every drawing; nonconformances down about a third.

Length

Five paragraphs in the usual 250 to 400 words. One design story gets the space; the rest supports it in a sentence or two.

This letter: 253 words.

The closing

It offers to discuss the product roadmap and where reliability work would pay off first, inviting a technical conversation.

Mistakes to avoid in this letter

  1. A CAD skills paragraph

Listing SolidWorks features wastes the letter. Show one product decision and its result.

  2. Confidential details

Do not share proprietary drawings or customer names. Percentages and product types are enough.

  3. No link to the employer's products

One sentence about what they make and how your experience applies shows you looked.

Questions about this cover letter

Should a mechanical engineer's cover letter mention the PE licence?
Yes, once near the end. It matters more for senior and consulting roles, but it is always a mark of professional standing.
How do I write the letter as a new graduate engineer?
Use your capstone, co-op or internship: the design problem, your part and the test results. Mention your EIT or FE status if you have it.
Should I attach a portfolio to the cover letter?
Link a short, non-confidential portfolio in the header. Offer to walk through it in the interview.
